Obverse description A panoramic view of the historic harbour of La Rochelle occupies the central field, depicting the two iconic medieval towers — the Tour Saint-Nicolas on the left and the Tour de la Chaîne on the right — flanking the entrance to the old port. Several sailing vessels with reflected masts are rendered in the foreground waters, conveying movement and maritime atmosphere. Seagulls in flight are incused in the upper right field, adding naturalistic detail to the composition. The design is executed in a fine engraved style with strong relief contrasts between the architectural elements and the reflective water surface.

Reverse description The reverse bears the denomination and issuing legend arranged in five horizontal lines across the central field: '20' at the top, followed by 'EURO', 'DE', 'LA ROCHELLE', and '7 - 18 OCTOBRE' above the date '1997' at the base. Twelve six-pointed stars, symbolic of the European Union, are arranged in a partial arc framing the upper and lateral portions of the field in the manner of the EU emblem. The Monnaie de Paris mint mark appears at the bottom of the field below the date. The overall design is bold and legible, in keeping with the commemorative euro precursor issues of the late 1990s.
