| Description de l’avers | The central field displays the full coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia, featuring a sailing ship on the sea, a rising sun, a palm tree, a dove, and a plow, all within a shield surmounted by a scroll bearing the national motto. The date 1998 is split to either side of the shield. Liberia's late-1990s commemorative silver program was frankly a collector-market confection — the country had no meaningful connection to the Chinese lunar calendar, and these pieces were produced for export sale, primarily into Asian and Pacific Rim markets hungry for bullion-format lunar issues. The "Type II" designation distinguishes a second die or packaging variant within the same year of issue, a common practice among the private minting contractors Liberia engaged during this period.
