Lady Godiva's famous ride through Coventry — recorded by chroniclers from the 13th century onward but possibly rooted in an 11th-century noblewoman named Godgifu, wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia — has no direct connection to Palau, a Pacific island nation that has built one of the more aggressive commemorative programs among modern sovereign mints. Palau regularly licenses its minting authority to European producers, primarily in Poland and Austria, for high-relief collector pieces aimed squarely at the themed silver market.
