| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse depicts a detailed relief of a cargo vessel transiting one of the Panama Canal locks, shown in a three-quarter bow perspective with the lock chamber walls and canal infrastructure visible in the background, set against a mountainous landscape. The scene commemorates the first transit through the Panama Canal in 1914. Selective gold plating highlights the vessel's hull and the outer rim. The legend VEINTE BALBOAS curves along the upper portion of the field, while the commemorative inscription 1914 PRIMER TRÁNSITO POR EL CANAL DE PANAMÁ arcs along the lower periphery, all rendered against a darkened mirror-polished background. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
The first transit of the Panama Canal occurred on August 3, 1914, when the cement carrier Cristobal made the full passage — quietly, without ceremony, ten days before the official opening. The canal had consumed roughly $375 million in U.S. funds and an estimated 5,600 lives during American construction alone, not counting the earlier French effort that collapsed under de Lesseps in 1889.
This 2016 issue marks the centennial of that passage, coinciding with the opening of the expanded third set of locks. The .9999 fineness is atypical for a circulation-weight silver round of this diameter, suggesting a deliberate collector positioning rather than any commemorative series continuity.
