Additional information

The first transit of the Panama Canal occurred on August 3, 1914, when the cement carrier Cristobal made the full passage — quietly, without ceremony, ten days before the official opening. The canal had consumed roughly $375 million in U.S. funds and an estimated 5,600 lives during American construction alone, not counting the earlier French effort that collapsed under de Lesseps in 1889.

This 2016 issue marks the centennial of that passage, coinciding with the opening of the expanded third set of locks. The .9999 fineness is atypical for a circulation-weight silver round of this diameter, suggesting a deliberate collector positioning rather than any commemorative series continuity.
