The collar and badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece encircles the central shield. Two smaller subsidiary shields flank the composition — the Habsburg arms at left and the arms of Ferrette (Pfirt) at right — dividing the abbreviated Latin legend which denotes the titles Dux Burgundiae, Landgravius Alsatiae, and Comes Ferretae. Ferdinand II of Tyrol died in January 1595, meaning this double thaler was struck right at the boundary of his reign's final months. As Archduke of Further Austria — a loose administrative cluster that included the Landgraviate of Upper Alsace — Ferdinand had governed the region since 1564, and issues from his Ensisheim mint carry a distinctly regional character separate from the main Tyrolean coinage produced at Hall.
