Ferdinand II of Tyrol died in January 1595, meaning this double thaler was struck right at the boundary of his reign's final months. As Archduke of Further Austria — a loose administrative cluster that included the Landgraviate of Upper Alsace — Ferdinand had governed the region since 1564, and issues from his Ensisheim mint carry a distinctly regional character separate from the main Tyrolean coinage produced at Hall.
