Issued as part of Bulgaria's 1300th anniversary commemorative series marking the founding of the First Bulgarian Empire in 681 AD, this piece was one of several circulating denominations restruck with modified designs for the jubilee year. The Bulgarian National Bank released the series across all standard denominations simultaneously, making the set broadly accessible rather than collector-targeted — most entered everyday circulation.
The "2nd Coat of Arms" designation distinguishes it from earlier People's Republic issues, reflecting heraldic revisions made under Todor Zhivkov's government in 1971.
