| Obverse description | Central field displays two rampant lions sejant-addorsed, facing outward, flanking a small cross-topped orb or firesteel device between them, all beneath a crown in the upper field. The design is rendered in the bold, vigorous style characteristic of late medieval Flemish hammered coinage. A beaded inner circle encloses the central device, separating it from the surrounding legend. The circumferential inscription in Gothic uncial lettering reads MARIA DVCISSA BG COMIT FLAD, identifying Mary as Duchess of Burgundy and Countess of Flanders. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular flan shape and uneven strike typical of hand-hammered production. |
