Opmerkingen

Marshall Hole was Civil Commissioner for Matabeleland when he authorized these card notes in 1900, acting under emergency powers during the Second Boer War when coin was being hoarded and hard currency had effectively vanished from circulation in Bulawayo. The Chronicle Printing Works was a newspaper printer — not a security printer — and the notes show it. Their authority rested entirely on Hole's signature and an affixed revenue or postage stamp serving as the sole security feature.

Hole later became a historian of Rhodesia, but this is among the most improvised quasi-official issues in the territory's monetary record. Survival rate is low; card stock in circulation deteriorates fast.
