Wolter von Plettenberg, Master of the Livonian Order, and Archbishop Jasper Linde jointly issued this coin during a period of uneasy co-governance in Riga — a city that both ecclesiastical and military authorities claimed administrative rights over. The dual authority shown on this issue reflects a formal arrangement that was perpetually contested, with the Order and the Archbishopric frequently at odds over jurisdiction, taxation, and trade privileges along the Daugava.
Plettenberg is best remembered for his decisive victory over Muscovite forces at the Battle of Smolina in 1502, which secured Livonian independence for a generation.
