The Banco y Casa de Moneda de Buenos Aires operated during the period when the Province of Buenos Aires had seceded from the Argentine Confederation — a political rupture that lasted from 1852 until Buenos Aires finally rejoined the unified republic in 1861. These copper 2 Reales were issued by a provincial institution, not a national one, a distinction that mattered enormously at the time and makes them products of a breakaway monetary system rather than any central authority.
The CJ#23 and CJ#24 designations reflect documented die varieties across the two-year run.
