The État de Syrie was the French Mandate administration's formal governing structure established after the League of Nations granted France control of Syria and Lebanon following the 1920 San Remo conference. These essai pieces were produced in Paris as test strikes to evaluate proposed coinage ahead of formal issue — standard Monnaie de Paris practice for mandate territories. The two Lec references suggest at least two distinct trial variants exist for this type, likely differing in edge treatment or metal finish rather than design.
