背面描述 The central circle depicts the LNER Mallard locomotive in profile, celebrating its historic achievement as the world's fastest steam locomotive, having reached 126 mph in 1938, a steam speed record never surpassed. The locomotive is rendered in fine detail with motion suggested by its streamlined Art Deco form. The inscription LONDON AND NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY arcs around the upper portion of the design, while the denomination TWO POUNDS appears at the base. The bimetallic appearance is enhanced by the gold-plated outer ring contrasting with the silver inner field.

附加信息

The Mallard holds the authenticated world speed record for steam locomotives — 126 mph, set on July 3, 1938, on the East Coast Main Line near Stoke Bank in Lincolnshire. That run was a deliberate publicity effort by the LNER, staged in part to upstage the rival LMS and its own record attempts. The locomotive was running so hot by the end of the run that the middle big-end bearing was close to failure.

The Isle of Man Treasury has issued prolifically in this commemorative format, and the gold-plated outer ring is a production feature shared across several coins in their transport heritage series.
