Obverse description The obverse displays the arms of the City of Münster as a heraldic achievement centered in the field, featuring a divided escutcheon surmounted by an episcopal crown or mitre. Two rampant lions serve as supporters, one flanking each side of the shield, facing inward. The lower portion of the design incorporates ornamental scrollwork and a decorative cartouche beneath the shield. The entire composition is enclosed within a toothed or milled border, with no surrounding legend, the civic arms forming the sole decorative element.

Additional information

Münster's municipal coinage of this period occupied an awkward jurisdictional space — the city operated under the authority of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster, and small copper issues like this one were tolerated rather than formally sanctioned, filling a gap in everyday exchange that larger ecclesiastical minting operations had no interest in serving.
