| Obverse description | Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within the coin field. Reading clockwise from top: 常 (Sang) at top, 通 (Tong) at right, 寶 (Bo) at bottom, and 平 (Pyong) at left, forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), identifying this as an official currency of the Sangpyeongcheong, the Department of Equalization of the Korean Joseon Dynasty. The characters are rendered in standard script (kaishu) style typical of Joseon-period cash coinage. |
