Berlin's municipal tramway authority issued multiple numbered series of these small-denomination Fahrgeldersatz notes during 1922 as the Reichsbank's printing capacity failed to keep pace with hyperinflation. Each issue in the sequence carried a different vignette tied to the city's transport infrastructure — Issue 9 depicts the elevated rail crossing over the Landwehrkanal, a structure well known to daily commuters on the western lines.
The Magistrat's dual-signature arrangement, with Adler and Harding signing in their official capacities, was a bureaucratic formality designed to give these transit tokens the appearance of legitimate monetary instruments. Whether they were accepted beyond the tram network in practice varied by neighborhood and by how desperate the month was.
