Flanking gate piers in blue carry the inscription "JESUITENKIRCHE 1686" across their latticed panels. Denomination medallions in black and gold occupy the upper left and upper right corners, bearing the numeral "2" and the Mark symbol "M" respectively. The printer's credit "FR. WILH. RUHFUS. Paderborn's Stadtsparkasse entered the notgeld market in 1921 during the acute small-change shortage that followed Germany's postwar coin hoarding crisis. Municipal savings banks issuing their own emergency denominations was legally tolerated rather than officially sanctioned — the Reichsbank had effectively lost control of low-denomination circulation by this point.
Ruhfus of Dortmund was a prolific notgeld printer with a solid regional client base across Westphalia, and Matern's design work for this issue sits comfortably within the decorative municipal style typical of the period's better-produced pieces. The four known variants catalogued under DeNG 1/2#1043.1-4/4 suggest serial or color differentiation rather than reissue — a distinction worth confirming before attribution.
