The Magistrat der Stadt Danzig issued this 2 Mark Notgeld in 1914, one of the earliest municipal emergency issues prompted by the coin hoarding that swept German cities in the opening weeks of the First World War. Silver and copper vanished from circulation almost immediately after mobilization, and local authorities across the German Empire scrambled to fill the void before the Reichsbank could respond at scale.
The embossed seal was the city's primary anti-counterfeiting measure — meaningful for a municipal authority without access to sophisticated intaglio printing. The watermarked paper adds a second layer, unusual for a wartime emergency issue at this denomination.
