John the Fearless issued this coin during the final, volatile years of his rule over Flanders, when he was simultaneously managing the Burgundian-Armagnac civil war in France and maneuvering for dominance over the mad king Charles VI. The "Kromstaart" — Flemish for "crooked tail" — is a collector nickname derived from a specific design peculiarity rather than any official designation, a naming convention common to the Low Countries series where workshop irregularities became identification markers across generations of dealers.
John was assassinated at the bridge of Montereau in September 1419, making this among the last coinage he authorized in his own name.
