Obverse description A fully armored knight stands facing left in dynamic posture, his head turned to the right, brandishing an upright sword in his right hand. Behind him rises the coat of arms of Zeeland, depicting a lion emerging from waves, symbolic of the province's struggle against the sea. The composition is rendered in the vigorous relief characteristic of hammered piedfort coinage of the Dutch Republic period. The peripheral legend encircles the design, separated from the central device by an inner border. The overall style reflects the robust heraldic idiom of late seventeenth-century provincial Dutch engraving.
