Additional information

The Shaoxi reign period (1190–1194) fell under Emperor Guangzong of the Southern Song, a ruler whose mental instability — well documented in court records — caused such administrative dysfunction that his own empress effectively governed in his place for stretches of the period. Coin production continued regardless, though Southern Song bronze cash of this era frequently show inconsistent casting quality attributable to regional furnace variation rather than any single mint failure.

The inclusion of the reign year on the reverse distinguishes this piece from the more common non-dated Shaoxi issues catalogued nearby in Hartill.
