To the left, a large stylised German imperial eagle vignette is set within a wreath-like heraldic frame inscribed 'DER REICHS-U. PAPIER-MARK' and 'STRACH 31, VERS 23 U. 24', with patriotic text interwoven throughout the design. Bielefeld's Stadtsparkasse issued a run of silk, linen, and leather Notgeld during the hyperinflation of 1923 — the so-called "Stoffgeld" — that attracted international attention and collector demand almost immediately. This paper piece is the less-celebrated sibling of that series, but the dual denomination is worth noting: "Goldmark / Dollar" parallel valuations reflect the desperate attempt by municipal issuers to peg emergency scrip to stable foreign benchmarks as the Reichsmark became functionally worthless by late 1923.
Gundlach was a local Bielefeld press, which kept production entirely within the city — unusual coherence for a municipal issue of this period.
