Issued to commemorate Pope John Paul II's pastoral visit to the Philippines in February 1981 — his first visit to Asia as pontiff — this gold piece was authorized by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas across a production window bracketing the actual visit. The Philippines had a historically significant Catholic majority, and Marcos framed the papal visit as an implicit endorsement of his administration, though the Pope met privately with opposition figures including Corazon Aquino's circle during his stay.
The 1981 Manila stop was part of a broader Asian tour that also included Japan. Attendance at the Manila open-air mass at Luneta Park reached an estimated one million people.
