A decorative starburst cartouche at upper right bears the numeral '15'. The issuer's name 'SUTTON & STEWART' and the promise 'PAY TO BEARER' appear in bold letterpress above the large ornate denomination legend 'FIFTEEN CENTS', with place and date 'Indiana, Pa., December 18th, 1862' at lower left and redemption condition at lower right, a small dog's head vignette centered at the bottom margin. |

The obverse design is visible in blue-grey show-through behind the red overprint, giving a two-color layered effect. |
