| Obverse description | Printed in purple-brown ink, the obverse carries an oval vignette at left of a seated woman in period dress shielding her eyes, flanked at center-top by an eagle in flight over an industrial landscape with factory and ships. A decorative starburst cartouche at upper right bears the numeral '15'. The issuer's name 'SUTTON & STEWART' and the promise 'PAY TO BEARER' appear in bold letterpress above the large ornate denomination legend 'FIFTEEN CENTS', with place and date 'Indiana, Pa., December 18th, 1862' at lower left and redemption condition at lower right, a small dog's head vignette centered at the bottom margin. |
