Above the crown, the Roman numeral XII denotes the denomination of twelve pence. The month of issue, 'May', is inscribed in script below the crowned cipher, a distinctive feature of Gun Money coinage used to facilitate later recalling and revaluation by date. The encircling Latin legend reads MAG. BR. FRA. ET HIB. REX, with the date 1690 appearing at the top of the reverse field. A beaded border frames the entire design. |
