| Reverse description | The reverse depicts the iconic skyline of Hong Kong harbour rendered in relief across the central field, evoking the city's distinctive urban and maritime character. A left-facing portrait bust of Tung Chee-hwa, the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is positioned at the upper portion of the design. Chinese characters appear at the bottom of the field, referencing the political principle of reunification. The legend BACK TO CHINA arcs along the upper periphery, and the Chinese inscription 一国两制 (One Country, Two Systems) is inscribed below the skyline. The design is enclosed within a beaded border along the inner rim. |

| Additional information |
Uganda's "Hong Kong" shilling series was issued to mark the 1997 handover of Hong Kong from British to Chinese sovereignty, with this 1996-dated piece among several commemoratives released in anticipation of the event. These large-format copper-nickel issues were produced primarily for the collector export market, never intended for domestic circulation, and are routinely found in original packaging without a trace of handling.
