The Turkmen manat was introduced in November 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble at a rate of 500 rubles to one manat — one of the more dramatic clean-break currency reforms among the former Soviet republics. This commemorative marks the ten-year anniversary of that transition under President Saparmurat Niyazov, whose personality cult so thoroughly dominated Turkmenistan's monetary and civic life that the currency itself became an instrument of state propaganda.
At 70 grams combining .917 gold and .925 silver in a 60mm bimetallic format, this is an unambiguously prestige issue — struck for collectors and foreign dignitaries, not circulation.
