| 表面の説明 | Printed in blue-black intaglio on white cotton paper, the obverse presents a richly engraved architectural composition in which paired allegorical figures in classical robes flank the central text field at left and right, accompanied by winged putti, medallion portraits, decorative scrollwork in the upper and lower registers, and reclining figures at the lower corners. The central panel carries the issuer name BANQUE DE FRANCE above a handwritten date, with the bold-script denomination legend mille francs. and the manuscript signatures of the Contrôleur, Caissier Principal, and Secrétaire Général below. Alphanumeric series and sheet numbers appear at the top and bottom corners, and the engraver's imprint BARRE FECIT is incorporated into the lower border. |

The type 1862 notes underwent a quiet but administratively significant modification in the 1870s: the serial indexing system was revised, giving rise to the "black index" variant designation that distinguishes this series from its immediate predecessor. Jacques-Jean Barre had died in 1855, meaning the obverse plates were engraved well before this note ever entered circulation — the Banque de France was still printing from designs nearly three decades old by the time the last of these left the vaults.
Charles Maurand was primarily known as a wood engraver working in the reproductive tradition, an unusual choice for intaglio banknote reverses. Whether his involvement here extended to original design work or adaptation of existing elements is not firmly established.
