Above the shield, two elephant tusks cross diagonally. A ribbon below the shield carries the national motto in the legend FRATERNITE JUSTICE TRAVAIL. The country name REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN arcs along the upper periphery in Latin lettering, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS CFA is inscribed along the lower periphery. The design is struck in proof finish against a mirror-polished field. |

In the lower portion of the field, a small bust of Klaus Störtebeker is shown in an arched frame, portraying the legendary privateer wearing a head covering and a beard. The legend KLAUS STÖRTEBEKER arcs along the upper periphery in Gothic-style Latin lettering. The year of Störtebeker's execution 1402 appears to the lower left, and the commemorative year 2002 appears to the lower right and additionally in small numerals to the right of the ship, marking the 600th anniversary of his death. |
