Obverse description The national coat of arms of the Republic of Benin occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing a castle, a star, a palm tree, and a sailing vessel, supported by two rampant lions. Above the shield, two elephant tusks cross diagonally. A ribbon below the shield carries the national motto in the legend FRATERNITE JUSTICE TRAVAIL. The country name REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN arcs along the upper periphery in Latin lettering, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS CFA is inscribed along the lower periphery. The design is struck in proof finish against a mirror-polished field.
