The Holy House of Mercy — Santa Casa da Misericórdia — was founded in Lisbon in 1498 under the patronage of Queen Leonor, making this issue a quincentenary commemoration. The institution began as a lay confraternity focused on charitable works and burial of the poor, and spread across the Portuguese empire with such efficiency that branches appeared in Goa, Macau, and Brazil within decades of the original foundation. It remains an active social welfare organization today.
