The Bank of Guyana was established in 1965, a year before independence was formally consolidated under the new republic, making the 40th anniversary a marker of the institution's full lifespan under sovereign governance. Commemorative proof issues of this type were produced in small quantities for the regional collector market and rarely saw meaningful secondary-market circulation.
