This note belongs to a short-lived Romanian overprint series applied to circulating Austro-Hungarian Korona banknotes following the occupation and annexation of Transylvania and the Banat in 1918–1919. Rather than printing entirely new currency, Romanian authorities stamped existing Austro-Hungarian paper with trilingual text identifying the new territorial administration — a pragmatic solution to an immediate liquidity problem in freshly acquired territory.
The overprint scheme was vulnerable to forgery almost immediately, and the series was withdrawn relatively quickly once Romanian leu-denominated notes reached adequate distribution. Unoverprinted Korona notes and forged overprints circulated alongside genuine examples, making authentication a persistent headache for the period.
