100 Réis - João IV Countermarked 80 Réis

Descrizione del dritto	Crowned royal arms displaying the cross of Portugal (the Quinas) in the field, surrounded by a beaded border with partial legend visible along the periphery. Applied over this host coin is a rectangular or oval countermark bearing the numerals '100', punched in the lower portion of the field, authenticating the revaluation of the original 80 Réis (LXXX Réis) issue. The underlying coin is a hammered silver piece attributable to the reign of João III or Filipe I of Portugal, with characteristic rough flan surfaces and partially legible original devices. The countermark was applied by royal decree in 1663 under João IV to circulate the coin at the new tariffed value of 100 Réis.
