The "Provisional Realist" designation places this coin within Mexico's long-running numismatic program commemorating the 1810–1821 War of Independence, specifically honoring figures and events associated with the royalist — or realist — faction that opposed insurgency. It is an unusual official acknowledgment: few nations mint coins celebrating the side that lost their own independence struggle. The series as a whole was issued to mark the independence bicentennial, and the bimetallic format was chosen to distinguish commemoratives from circulation coinage.
