Suriname issued this piece to mark Brazil's fourth World Cup title, won in the United States in 1994 — the tournament decided by penalty shootout for the first time in final history, with Brazil defeating Italy. The Centrale Bank produced commemorative guilder issues in multiple compositions for the event, of which KM#44b is the base-metal circulation strike.
By 1994, the Surinamese guilder was under severe inflationary pressure following years of political instability and a trade embargo tied to the 1990 "telephone coup." A 100-guilder face value that once carried real purchasing weight had eroded substantially by the time these were struck.
