| Beschrijving voorzijde | The national coat of arms of Suriname is depicted centrally, featuring a shield supported by two indigenous figures, with a diamond pattern and a ship in the upper quarters and a green field with a yellow star in the lower quarters, surmounted by a palm tree. The shield is flanked by two native supporters standing on a decorative base bearing the motto ribbon. The entire device is enclosed within a broad, ornate laurel and palm wreath occupying most of the field. The country name SURINAME appears in bold lettering beneath the shield, with the motto JUSTITIA PIETAS FIDES inscribed on the ribbon across the base of the shield. |

Suriname issued this piece to mark Brazil's fourth World Cup title, won in the United States in 1994 — the tournament decided by penalty shootout for the first time in final history, with Brazil defeating Italy. The Centrale Bank produced commemorative guilder issues in multiple compositions for the event, of which KM#44b is the base-metal circulation strike.
By 1994, the Surinamese guilder was under severe inflationary pressure following years of political instability and a trade embargo tied to the 1990 "telephone coup." A 100-guilder face value that once carried real purchasing weight had eroded substantially by the time these were struck.
