The Centrale Bank produced commemorative guilder issues in multiple compositions for the event, of which KM#44b is the base-metal circulation strike.
By 1994, the Surinamese guilder was under severe inflationary pressure following years of political instability and a trade embargo tied to the 1990 "telephone coup." A 100-guilder face value that once carried real purchasing weight had eroded substantially by the time these were struck.
