Struck to commemorate the 1938 marriage of King Zog I to the Hungarian countess Geraldine Apponyi, this issue was produced just fourteen months before Italy's invasion forced Zog into exile permanently. The wedding itself was funded largely by Mussolini's government — a detail that makes the celebratory coinage quietly ironic.
Mintages were small and distribution was largely ceremonial rather than commercial. Most examples saw no circulation whatsoever.
