| Obverse description | The coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia occupies the central field, depicting an eagle and a lion flanking a quartered shield bearing Mount Ararat, an eagle, a lion, and a double-headed eagle, surmounted by a star and a striped ribbon at the base. The date 2006 appears above the arms. The denomination '100' is inscribed at the bottom of the inner field, flanked by the word 'DRAM' to the left and its Armenian equivalent 'ԴՐԱՄ' to the right. The outer border carries the Armenian legend 'ՀԱՅԱՍՏԱՆԻ ՀԱՆՐԱՊԵՏՈՒԹՅՈՒՆ' along the upper arc and 'REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA' along the lower arc, all rendered in relief against a polished proof field. |

The International Polar Year 2007–2008 was a large-scale coordinated scientific program involving over 60 nations — the fourth such event in history, following those of 1882–83, 1932–33, and 1957–58. Armenia issued this coin ahead of the program's launch, a notable gesture given the country has no Arctic or Antarctic territorial claim or research station.
