| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse features four large Chinese characters arranged in a cross pattern around a central square hole, reading clockwise from top in the traditional coin script style: 咸 (top), 元 (right), 寶 (bottom), 豐 (left), forming the reign title and denomination inscription 咸豐元寶 (Xianfeng Yuanbao, meaning 'Xianfeng Primordial Treasure'). The characters are rendered in a bold, regular script (kaishu) with pronounced strokes, cast in high relief against a flat field. The coin exhibits a broad, plain rim framing the design on both the outer edge and the inner edges of the central square perforation. The overall aesthetic is characteristic of mid-nineteenth century Qing dynasty Board of Revenue coinage. |
