Haan is a small town in the Bergisches Land district of North Rhine-Westphalia, administratively part of the Mettmann district. Like hundreds of German municipalities during the hyperinflationary crisis of 1923, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — because the Reichsbank simply could not print and distribute legal tender fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time denominations like this one reached 100,000 Mark, that figure represented ordinary daily commerce, not exceptional value.
Walter Schreiber & Fey operated out of nearby Solingen, making them a logical choice for a local contract. Regional printers handled the bulk of municipal Notgeld production in this period — speed and proximity mattered far more than prestige.
