Trier's municipal administration was among hundreds of German local authorities forced to issue their own emergency currency in 1923 as Reichsbank supply collapsed under hyperinflation. By the time this note was authorized, the mark's purchasing power was deteriorating so fast that denominations previously unimaginable were routine — 100 million marks was already a transitional figure, not an endpoint. Notes of this type were often obsolete within days of printing.

The Trierer Druckerei Gesellschaft was a local commercial printer pressed into monetary service, as were many regional firms that year. Quality control was not the priority; speed was.
