The Bank of China's 1924 series was issued under the warlord-era Republican government, when the bank itself was still navigating a precarious dual role as both a commercial institution and a quasi-central bank — a tension that would persist until the Nationalists consolidated control later in the decade. American Bank Note Company had been the dominant supplier of Chinese government securities and currency printing since the late Qing period, and the relationship continued well into the Republic largely because domestic high-security printing capacity simply didn't exist at scale.
P#62 exists with regional overprints for various branch cities, and these local variants carry meaningfully different scarcity profiles — a Shanghai-overprinted example and one prepared for Yunnan are not remotely equivalent finds.
