The "A-series" Allied Military Currency issued for Japan in 1945 was prepared in advance of an invasion that never happened. When Japan surrendered in August 1945, occupation forces used these notes anyway — they circulated alongside existing Bank of Japan issues until SCAP began withdrawing them in 1946 in favor of new BoJ series issued under occupation supervision.
The "A" block letter prefix was a control device, not a series identifier in the conventional sense. Notes without the prefix were intended for a different theater and were never released in Japan.
