Issued to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, this coin presented Bangladesh with a small diplomatic nuance: Tagore was born in Calcutta, spent formative years at the family estate in Shelaidaha (now in Bangladesh), and wrote what became the national anthems of both Bangladesh and India — a fact that makes him an unusual shared cultural figure whose commemoration sits more comfortably in Dhaka than it might at first appear.
