Obverse description The national coat of arms of the Kyrgyz Republic is depicted in the upper half of the field, featuring the traditional tunduk motif surmounted by a rising sun above mountain peaks, encircled by wheat sheaves and framed by wings with an eagle displayed below. Beneath the arms, a facsimile cursive signature of the author Chingiz Aitmatov is rendered across the lower field. A bilingual circular legend in Kyrgyz and Russian encircles the design, and the date 2009 appears in the exergue.

Additional information

Jamila is the title of Chingiz Aitmatov's 1958 novella, widely considered the finest short work in Kyrgyz literature — the French poet Louis Aragon famously called it "the world's most beautiful love story" after translating it himself. This coin was issued the year of Aitmatov's death, part of a broader commemorative program the National Bank launched to honor his life and output following his passing in June 2008.
