| Obverse description | Central field features the quartered coat of arms of the Order of St. John, combining the white eight-pointed cross of the Hospitallers with the crescent devices associated with Grand Master Manuel Pinto de Fonseca, the whole surmounted by a mural or princely crown with a small star above. The shield is flanked by a laurel branch to the left and a palm branch to the right, tied at the base. The circular Latin legend surrounding the design reads F.EMMANVEL PINTO M.M.H.S.S. with the date 1761, distributed around the periphery. The coin exhibits a boldly struck, high-relief design characteristic of Maltese milled gold coinage of the mid-eighteenth century. The toothed border frames the entire composition. |
